January 2009

Welcome to 2009. The conference season is here and that always means one thing. We will now get plenty of chances to see the Hawks in action at home. This year is extra special as we get a treat right in the middle of the winter. You can call it a one-game "break" from America East play, but I'm not sure that is the best term to use on Feb. 15, when Marist comes to town. The Red Foxes cracked the top 25 during the first AP Poll of the calendar year and this is one growing rivalry between two of the nation's top mid-major programs. Just to add a little frosting, this game will be the first nationally televised game for Hartford women's basketball with the lights of ESPN2 shining upon Chase Arena, Reich Family Pavilion. Don't even think about sitting in front of the TV at home. The hope is that the house will be packed for this battle and to recognize another battle--the fight against breast cancer. It's "Think Pick" week across the country and on Feb. 15, despite two teams whose colors are red, pink will be taking center stage. It promises to be a special night.

Looking back to November and December, the Hawks' 5-7 record was something we weren't too use to seeing the past few years. However, the heavily-weighted road schedule against some of the nation's top teams clearly showed in the RPI index. Most of the RPI-rating lists available to the public had the Hawks in the 40s at the turn of the year, with collegerpi.com noting a strength of schedule third in the nation. The lumps, lessons, and layovers of late 2008 will only benefit Hartford come March.
